About Merrill MFG: Installation & Troubleshooting
Merrill heavy-duty PVC tank tees are made of sch. 120 coupling material, the same extra heavy sch. 120 PVC used in Merrill drop pipe couplings for years.
PVC Tank Tees
PVC tank tees can be cracked by installation abuse (voids warranty) as brass and galvanized tees can be. The pipe and or fittings screwed into a PVC or brass tee should not be turned more than one revolution past hand tight. Pipe thread paste or sealant compatible with PVC (teflon based) is to be used on the threads to insure a watertight seal. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. When over tightening tapered pipe threads, the taper is a wedge that can expand threads and crack the tank tee. Installation abuse can be determined by inspection of thread diameter, and by number of threads on the fitting or pipe that was installed.
Warning: DO NOT put wrench on end of tee to tighten during installation. Tees should always be tightened with wrench on the fitting or pipe end next to the other wrench used to turn in the fitting or pipe into the tee. Improper installation may cause damage to the tee or loosen a joint to cause a leak. This is not a defect in the tee. Improper installation and over tightening threads will void the warranty.
A quality Merrill product made of FDA approved compounds, NOT rubber or other regrind scrap material sold by others that can add a taste or odor to the water.
Torque Arrestors
Placement: The first torque arrestor should be placed no more than 3' above the pump near the bottom of the well. Then at intervals of 75' to 100' above the first torque arrestor.
Installation: Place the torque arrestor around the drop pipe so that each half is spaced evenly. Install the lower pipe clamp and tighten. Install the upper pipe clamp (leave loose) and then push down on the torque arrestor to spread the center portion so it fits the inside of the casing.
Just a snug fit, do not spread it so much that it is hard to get it in the casing. Then tighten the upper clamp. It is very important that the upper clamp is as tight as possible. This will make it easier to remove the pump at a later date.
